Cloudflare now lets developers pull live web search results through a simple API call.
The company's developer platform added a Web Search API, detailed in an Oct. 2 changelog post. The announcement surfaced on Hacker News over the weekend, picking up 50 points and a modest 16 comments. Cloudflare has spent the last few years building Workers, Pages, and its AI Gateway into a broader developer suite, and this slots search in as another building block. Specifics beyond the changelog itself are thin, but the positioning is clear: search becomes infrastructure you call, not a product you visit.
AI agents and chatbots need a way to ground answers in current events, and until now that meant scraping, paying a search provider, or building your own index. Offering search access straight from the edge network that many developers already use for DNS, CDN, and Workers is a shortcut worth watching. It is also another sign that search is being unbundled from the browser and re-bundled into APIs that AI products quietly call behind the scenes.
Search-as-an-API is not new - Bing and Google have sold that access for years at a premium. The open question is whether Cloudflare undercuts them enough to matter, or just adds one more search API to a market that already has plenty.
