The country expects to produce about 3.5 million AI chips this year against demand that \"far exceeds\" 5 million - a shortfall of roughly 1.5 million chips. To close that gap, companies are turning to Nvidia's export-control-compliant gaming and workstation cards, mostly the RTX Pro 6000D, RTX Pro 5000, and RTX 5090. Those chips can't match Huawei's Ascend 910C on raw AI performance, but they're apparently good enough for simpler jobs like prefilling.\n\nThe bigger story is that China's AI self-sufficiency push hasn't eliminated its reliance on Nvidia - it's just rerouted it through a side door. Even with Beijing pushing Huawei's Cann software stack, CUDA's maturity keeps pulling buyers back to Nvidia hardware despite the export rules. That demand is also squeezing an already tight GPU market: the RTX 5090's $1,999 MSRP is now a punchline, with the few resellers still stocking it charging upward of $7,199.\n\nNvidia reportedly plans to replace the RTX 5090 with a 24GB RTX 5080 as its new flagship - a downgrade from the 5090's 32GB. If gamers are wondering where their enthusiast cards went, the data center is as good a guess as any.","[\"china\",\"nvidia\",\"gpus\",\"ai-chips\"]","2026-10-13T14:32:20.000Z","2026-10-13T17:32:49.797Z","2026-10-13T17:32:54.958Z","published",null,[],"hardware",[26,27,28,29],"china","nvidia","gpus","ai-chips",[31],{"name":32,"url":33},"Tom's Hardware","https:\u002F\u002Fwww.tomshardware.com\u002Fpc-components\u002Fgpus\u002Fchinese-ai-companies-buy-1-million-nvidia-gpus-in-a-single-year-report-claims-export-control-compliant-chips-flood-the-market-to-bridge-gap-in-compute-demand",0,{"sections":36},[37,42,47,52,57,61,66,71,76,81,86,91,96,101],{"name":38,"slug":39,"count":40,"latest_published_at":41},"AI","ai",6989,"2026-10-13T20:09:54.000Z",{"name":43,"slug":44,"count":45,"latest_published_at":46},"Security","security",971,"2026-10-13T18:57:01.000Z",{"name":48,"slug":49,"count":50,"latest_published_at":51},"Policy","policy",502,"2026-10-13T19:35:29.000Z",{"name":53,"slug":54,"count":55,"latest_published_at":56},"Deals","deals",500,"2026-10-13T18:33:14.000Z",{"name":58,"slug":24,"count":59,"latest_published_at":60},"Hardware",250,"2026-10-13T19:34:34.000Z",{"name":62,"slug":63,"count":64,"latest_published_at":65},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",211,"2026-10-13T20:01:54.000Z",{"name":67,"slug":68,"count":69,"latest_published_at":70},"Science","science",200,"2026-10-13T19:17:42.000Z",{"name":72,"slug":73,"count":74,"latest_published_at":75},"Startups","startups",131,"2026-10-13T20:13:53.000Z",{"name":77,"slug":78,"count":79,"latest_published_at":80},"Software","software",122,"2026-10-13T18:25:37.000Z",{"name":82,"slug":83,"count":84,"latest_published_at":85},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",116,"2026-10-13T16:20:18.000Z",{"name":87,"slug":88,"count":89,"latest_published_at":90},"General","general",75,"2026-10-13T18:10:08.000Z",{"name":92,"slug":93,"count":94,"latest_published_at":95},"Gaming","gaming",65,"2026-10-13T19:00:48.000Z",{"name":97,"slug":98,"count":99,"latest_published_at":100},"Reviews","reviews",36,"2026-10-13T18:00:00.000Z",{"name":102,"slug":103,"count":104,"latest_published_at":105},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
