China's cyberspace regulator is investigating DeepSeek and Moonshot after both were singled out in a report from Anthropic.
The Cyberspace Administration of China summoned all seven AI companies named in Anthropic's report, according to Jing Yang and Qianer Liu of The Information, who reported the story Tuesday. The inquiry quickly narrowed to just two of those companies: DeepSeek and Moonshot. That's because the report's examples centered on them specifically. What CAC is investigating, and what consequences the companies might face, wasn't detailed in the reporting.
DeepSeek and Moonshot are two of the AI companies China holds up as evidence it can match US labs on model quality. Having an American AI company's report trigger a domestic investigation into them is an awkward wrinkle in that narrative, regardless of what CAC ultimately finds. For Anthropic, it's a case study in how a competitive analysis can ripple well past the market it was written for.
Anthropic hasn't said whether it anticipated a government investigation would follow its own report.
