OpenAI is taking ChatGPT Ads into 26 more countries, and says more than 100,000 advertisers have now used the platform.
The company's pitch centers on shopping. From local businesses to global brands, it said, advertisers can reach people "as they explore, compare and decide what to buy" in ChatGPT. That is OpenAI describing its own product, but the phrasing is telling. Exploring, comparing and deciding is the funnel that search advertising has monetized for two decades.
The two numbers in the announcement measure different things. The 26 countries describe geographic reach. The 100,000 advertisers count who has tried the platform, not how much they spend or whether they came back for a second campaign. A trial count is the easiest advertising milestone to hit and the least informative about revenue.
Still, the direction is clear. A chatbot that started as a subscription product is building an ad business, which puts it in the same market as the established ad operations at Google and Meta. Those companies sell placements next to search results and feeds. ChatGPT sells them next to an answer.
That difference is the open question. When an assistant responds to a purchase question, its reply reads as a recommendation. How clearly a paid placement is separated from that reply will matter more to users than the number of countries or advertisers.
