Character.AI, the chatbot startup that helped kick off the generative-AI roleplay craze, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is selling pieces of itself to Disney.
In a press release and blog post published Monday, Character.AI said it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US to facilitate the sale of the company and its assets to Disney. The startup, one of the first breakout names of the generative-AI boom, lets users chat and roleplay with a library of AI-generated characters. It has spent the past year under mounting legal pressure, facing lawsuits over the safety of its chatbots. Even so, the company kept shipping new features and products right up until the filing.
A pioneer of the chatbot-roleplay category going bankrupt is a reminder that user growth and legal liability do not always move in the same direction. Disney picking through the wreckage suggests the entertainment giant sees value in character-based AI interactions, even if the company that built the category couldn't survive its own lawsuits.
Character.AI once looked like a breakout AI darling; now it's a cautionary tale about what happens when a product scales faster than its safety record.
