From 2023 to 2024, Lui and unnamed co-conspirators allegedly shipped high-end Nvidia servers to Malaysia and Singapore, two countries where the chips aren't restricted, then rerouted them to buyers in China, including the Chinese government. The scheme relied on falsified paperwork claiming the servers were headed to permissible end users who didn't need an export license. He's charged with conspiracy to violate export control law, outbound smuggling, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

This is not a one-off. Last month, nine people in Taiwan were indicted over smuggled Nvidia B300 GPUs bound for China, and cases like this keep surfacing the same playbook: ship to a permissive third country, repaper the destination, forward the hardware on. Years of export controls haven't killed that market; they've just priced in the legal risk.

Washington keeps tightening the embargo; Beijing keeps insisting it only strengthens local chipmaking. The paperwork trail here tells a simpler story: demand for Nvidia silicon in China is strong enough that someone always takes the bet.","["nvidia","china","export controls","chip smuggling"]","2026-10-02T14:53:41.000Z","2026-10-05T08:34:16.542Z","2026-10-05T08:34:22.606Z","published",null,[],"policy",[26,27,28,29],"nvidia","china","export controls","chip smuggling",[31,34,37
Tom's Hardware","https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/california-tech-ceo-arrested-faces-up-to-20-years-in-prison-for-smuggling-usd300-million-in-nvidia-ai-servers-to-china-federal-prosecutors-say-chips-were-routed-through-malaysia-and-singapore-using-false-paperwork
Ars Technica","https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/10/us-arrests-tech-ceo-accused-of-smuggling-300m-in-nvidia-chips-into-china/
The Next Web","https://thenextweb.com/news/greg-lui-earthmade-ai-server-smuggling-china",0
43,48,52,56,61,66,70,75,80,85,90,95,100,105
"AI","ai",6152,"2026-10-05T04:00:00.000Z
"Security","security",859
"Policy",444,"2026-10-03T15:02:01.000Z
"Deals","deals",323,"2026-10-04T13:00:00.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",204,"2026-10-03T14:50:50.000Z
"Science","science",177
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",158,"2026-10-03T03:21:12.000Z
"Software","software",97,"2026-10-04T10:00:00.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",96,"2026-10-01T16:57:03.000Z
"Startups","startups",92,"2026-10-04T14:36:25.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",53,"2026-10-02T02:50:39.000Z
"General","general",51,"2026-10-05T02:35:01.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",32,"2026-10-02T18:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",7,"2026-10-01T09:00:00.000Z"]
