ByteDance rents almost all of the data center capacity it uses in China - and that's roughly a fifth of the entire country's supply.
That's the estimate from semiconductor and AI research firm SemiAnalysis, published in a report on Friday. The firm says ByteDance's footprint makes it the single most important customer for every wholesale data center operator doing business in China. Unlike US hyperscalers such as Amazon and Google, which typically build and own their own facilities, ByteDance leases its capacity instead.
That concentration hands ByteDance outsized leverage over pricing and priority access with China's wholesale operators - a position no other single tenant holds. It's also a rare, concrete data point on how much infrastructure a single Chinese tech company needs to run at ByteDance's scale, in a market where such figures are usually opaque.
A wholesale operator with one customer this large isn't really a landlord anymore. It's a subcontractor.
