BYD says its new solid-state EV battery is nearly ready for the road.
The Chinese automaker says its solid-state battery technology for electric vehicles is close to production-ready. BYD is one of several carmakers expected to bring solid-state batteries to market within the next few years. The company did not share test data, a car model, or a firm delivery date alongside the claim. Solid-state batteries have been pitched across the industry as a safer, more energy-dense successor to today's lithium-ion cells.
Solid-state batteries could mean EVs that charge faster and catch fire less often, which is why every major carmaker is chasing them. Being first to actually ship one, rather than just announce one, is where the real advantage sits. BYD's timing claim puts pressure on rivals making similar promises, but it does not yet put a battery in a customer's driveway.
Automakers have been calling solid-state batteries 'nearly ready' for years. The next few years will tell us if BYD means it.
