It pinpoints the exact decision points where a student model is most unsure or most at odds with its teacher, then resamples several alternate continuations from that same shared prefix. A larger teacher model applies token-level grading to every branch and every main trajectory, not just one finished run. The paper also adds a fix called protocol-boundary repair, aimed at stopping the student from rambling or repeating itself once it bumps into task-specific limits.\n\nThat branching matters because on-policy distillation has a built-in blind spot: a single generated trajectory only shows what the student does at one decision point, so a finite sampling budget mostly gets spent re-covering ground that's already fine.
