Bitdefender wants to put its VPN between your AI agent and the internet, not between you and it.
Ciprian Istrate, who runs consumer operations at Bitdefender, said on Tuesday that security can no longer stop at protecting the person behind the screen - it has to extend to the agent acting on their behalf. The Romanian security company is launching a VPN designed for AI agents themselves, not for the humans who deploy them. That is a different pitch than the VPN market has made for the past decade, where the customer was always a person hiding their own traffic.
AI agents increasingly log into accounts, make purchases, and browse the web unsupervised, which means they carry their own attack surface separate from the device that spawned them. Treating an agent as a security subject rather than just a tool is a meaningful shift, even if Bitdefender is early to frame it that way.
Whether that framing survives contact with actual products remains to be seen - security vendors have a long history of repackaging existing tech behind a fresh label the moment a new buzzword takes off.
