The new 800XL is described as a faithful recreation of the original all-in-one machine, right down to its mechanical keyboard. That keyboard lets users write their own programs in Atari BASIC, not just play games. It's up for preorder now at $219.99, with shipping expected in April 2027.\n\nThat's a long wait for a retro gadget, and it says something about how crowded this space has become. Nostalgia hardware now competes less on novelty and more on faithfulness to the original experience, and a working BASIC keyboard is a specific flex aimed at people who actually coded on these machines, not just played on them.\n\nThe 800XL was a successor to Atari's original 400 and 800 computers from 1979, so this isn't a reboot of Atari's first PC, just one of its better-remembered ones.","[\"atari\",\"retro-computing\",\"800xl\",\"plaion\"]","2026-10-08T14:16:37.000Z","2026-10-09T10:07:50.997Z","2026-10-09T10:07:55.490Z","published",null,[24,30,35],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"editor-r1","editor",1,"The body claims an '18-month gap between preorder and delivery,' but preorders are open now and shipping starts April 2027 — roughly a 6-month gap, not 18 — so correct or drop this unsupported\u002Fmiscalculated figure.","resolved",{"id":31,"reviewer":32,"round":33,"reason":34,"status":29},"publisher-r2","publisher",2,"The body incorrectly attributes Mattel's Intellivision revival to Atari's own string of hardware relaunches, which is a factual\u002Fattribution error.",{"id":36,"reviewer":26,"round":37,"reason":38,"status":29},"editor-r3",3,"The headline calls the 800XL 'Its Original 8-Bit PC,' but Atari's original 8-bit computers were the 400 and 800 from 1979 — the 800XL was a 1983 successor model, so fix the headline to not imply it was Atari's first machine.","consumer-tech",[41,42,43,44],"atari","retro-computing","800xl","plaion",[46],{"name":47,"url":48},"The Verge","https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002Ftech\u002F1007732\u002Fatari-console-800xl-basic-personal-computer-retro-preorder",0,{"sections":51},[52,57,62,67,72,77,82,86,91,96,101,106,111,116],{"name":53,"slug":54,"count":55,"latest_published_at":56},"AI","ai",6528,"2026-10-08T16:21:29.000Z",{"name":58,"slug":59,"count":60,"latest_published_at":61},"Security","security",922,"2026-10-08T16:05:00.000Z",{"name":63,"slug":64,"count":65,"latest_published_at":66},"Policy","policy",478,"2026-10-08T15:24:40.000Z",{"name":68,"slug":69,"count":70,"latest_published_at":71},"Deals","deals",467,"2026-10-08T15:01:29.000Z",{"name":73,"slug":74,"count":75,"latest_published_at":76},"Hardware","hardware",225,"2026-10-08T13:10:18.000Z",{"name":78,"slug":79,"count":80,"latest_published_at":81},"Science","science",188,"2026-10-08T15:28:36.000Z",{"name":83,"slug":39,"count":84,"latest_published_at":85},"Consumer Tech",179,"2026-10-08T16:00:00.000Z",{"name":87,"slug":88,"count":89,"latest_published_at":90},"Startups","startups",117,"2026-10-08T16:45:00.000Z",{"name":92,"slug":93,"count":94,"latest_published_at":95},"Software","software",113,"2026-10-07T18:10:00.000Z",{"name":97,"slug":98,"count":99,"latest_published_at":100},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",105,"2026-10-07T16:59:11.000Z",{"name":102,"slug":103,"count":104,"latest_published_at":105},"General","general",63,"2026-10-08T16:57:00.000Z",{"name":107,"slug":108,"count":109,"latest_published_at":110},"Gaming","gaming",57,"2026-10-08T15:18:41.000Z",{"name":112,"slug":113,"count":114,"latest_published_at":115},"Reviews","reviews",34,"2026-10-08T14:00:22.000Z",{"name":117,"slug":118,"count":119,"latest_published_at":120},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
