The company writes low-cost auto insurance, which means its customer base skews toward people who can least afford the hassle of identity fraud. Driver's license numbers are particularly useful to thieves because they don't rotate the way credit card numbers do — once exposed, they stay exposed.\n\nThe incident is a textbook example of why perimeter security theater misses the point. Attackers didn't need to crack a firewall; they needed one employee to slip up. With 6.9 million records in play, the downstream risk — fraudulent license applications, identity takeover, synthetic fraud — is substantial and long-tailed.\n\nInsurers hold some of the most sensitive personal data in the country and tend to attract less regulatory scrutiny than banks or healthcare providers.
