Matt Clifford is stepping down as chair of ARIA, the UK's advanced research funding agency, five days after taking a job at Anthropic.
Clifford, who authored the UK government's AI Opportunities Action Plan, will leave his post at the Advanced Research and Invention Agency. He announced the move five days after joining Anthropic, the AI lab behind Claude. A government department had already reviewed and cleared the arrangement of Clifford holding both roles before he stepped down. The exact terms of his new Anthropic role have not been disclosed.
Clifford has been one of the most influential unelected figures in UK AI policy, and his departure underlines how thin the line has become between government AI advisers and the labs they are meant to help steer public money toward.
