The machine is expected to sit above the current MacBook Pro line, possibly under a new MacBook Ultra name, and run on the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than new silicon. Gurman says it will keep a full keyboard and trackpad, so the touchscreen is optional, not a replacement for how you already use a Mac. Hints of the hardware have already surfaced in the macOS 27 developer beta, including pull-to-refresh gestures and a Dynamic Island style notification cutout.\n\nThis is a reversal from a decade of Apple executives, including now-CEO John Ternus, insisting Macs didn't need touch. Windows laptops like the Dell XPS 14 have shipped OLED touchscreens for years, so Apple is catching up on hardware, not inventing a category. If the price pattern from the iPad Pro's OLED upgrade holds, expect a thinner, lighter machine that also costs noticeably more.\n\nApple's iPad Pro got 20% thinner, 15% lighter, and roughly 20% pricier when it adopted OLED in 2024, and if the Mac follows that same formula, touch may arrive bundled with a real price premium, not just a design flourish.","[\"apple\",\"macbook\",\"oled-display\",\"mac-rumors\"]","2026-10-05T15:02:08.000Z","2026-10-06T06:48:54.184Z","2026-10-06T06:48:58.960Z","published",null,[24],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"editor-r1","editor",1,"Fix the iPad Pro OLED stat in the final paragraph: the source says iPad Pro got 20% thinner and 15% lighter (not 20% lighter) plus ~20% pricier when it moved to OLED — don't collapse all three into 'about 20 percent'.","resolved","hardware",[32,33,34,35],"apple","macbook","oled-display","mac-rumors",[37],{"name":38,"url":39},"Mashable","https:\u002F\u002Fmashable.com\u002Ftech\u002Fapple-oled-touchscreen-macbook-ultra-latest-rumors-release-date-leaks-2026",0,{"sections":42},[43,48,53,58,63,67,72,77,82,87,92,97,102,107],{"name":44,"slug":45,"count":46,"latest_published_at":47},"AI","ai",6335,"2026-10-05T18:29:00.000Z",{"name":49,"slug":50,"count":51,"latest_published_at":52},"Security","security",875,"2026-10-05T17:21:11.000Z",{"name":54,"slug":55,"count":56,"latest_published_at":57},"Policy","policy",455,"2026-10-05T18:15:20.000Z",{"name":59,"slug":60,"count":61,"latest_published_at":62},"Deals","deals",353,"2026-10-05T18:35:08.000Z",{"name":64,"slug":30,"count":65,"latest_published_at":66},"Hardware",209,"2026-10-05T15:55:29.000Z",{"name":68,"slug":69,"count":70,"latest_published_at":71},"Science","science",182,"2026-10-05T18:58:12.000Z",{"name":73,"slug":74,"count":75,"latest_published_at":76},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",161,"2026-10-05T18:18:56.000Z",{"name":78,"slug":79,"count":80,"latest_published_at":81},"Software","software",103,"2026-10-05T18:23:19.000Z",{"name":83,"slug":84,"count":85,"latest_published_at":86},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",99,"2026-10-05T10:47:06.000Z",{"name":88,"slug":89,"count":90,"latest_published_at":91},"Startups","startups",94,"2026-10-05T18:07:07.000Z",{"name":93,"slug":94,"count":95,"latest_published_at":96},"Gaming","gaming",54,"2026-10-05T19:07:04.000Z",{"name":98,"slug":99,"count":100,"latest_published_at":101},"General","general",52,"2026-10-05T17:01:27.000Z",{"name":103,"slug":104,"count":105,"latest_published_at":106},"Reviews","reviews",33,"2026-10-05T11:57:17.000Z",{"name":108,"slug":109,"count":110,"latest_published_at":111},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
