Apple's first real push into smart home hardware leans on a camera-heavy doorbell and a healthy dose of Siri.
Apple showed off its new Home Collection at a "Welcome Home" event, the company's broadest smart home lineup yet. The headline device is a video doorbell with two cameras instead of one, paired with a Siri-based AI layer meant to handle requests across the lineup. The collection also adds cross-platform unlocking, letting other devices and services open smart locks without routing everything through Apple's own ecosystem first. In hands-on testing, three features stood out as the strongest part of the launch: the dual-camera doorbell, the Siri AI integration, and that cross-platform unlocking.
The cross-platform piece is the detail worth watching. Apple has spent two decades building products that work best, sometimes only, with other Apple products. A smart home gadget that plays nice with non-Apple locks and services is a break from that playbook, even if it's a small one. It suggests Apple is prioritizing getting installed in more homes over keeping everyone locked into its ecosystem.
Ring and Nest have sold video doorbells for years. Apple is late to this category, and the dual-camera design and Siri layer read more like catching up than leading.
