Apple's first tabletop smart display can fade its screen down to 0.3 nits, the darkest Apple screen yet.
The 7-inch Liquid Retina display on HomeView adjusts brightness automatically, climbing to 500 nits in sunlit rooms and sinking to 0.3 nits in the dark, a record low for an Apple product. The previous floor, 1 nit, debuted on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 before moving to iPhone. True Tone keeps the panel's color temperature matched to the room as light shifts. A stainless steel hinge lets the screen tilt, and the interface simplifies at a distance, showing more detail as someone walks closer.
A screen that dims to near-invisible brightness is the difference between a nightstand clock you tolerate and one you actually want next to your bed. It also signals Apple treating ambient-light adaptation, refined for years on Watch and iPhone, as core infrastructure rather than a wearable-only trick.
Amazon and Google have sold always-on bedroom displays for years; Apple's contribution here is mostly polish, not a new idea.
