The new configuration pairs an M5 Ultra chip with Apple's Mac Studio desktop, sitting above the already-powerful M5 Max version. In hands-on testing, the M5 Ultra delivers a real jump in AI and graphics performance over its Max sibling. But that jump comes bundled with a price tag that starts at $11,299 for the top build. For the money, buyers get more raw compute, not a different machine.
This is the classic Apple Ultra-chip trade-off: the ceiling goes up, but so does the price of touching it. Only workloads that actually saturate an M5 Max, like heavy AI training, large-scale rendering, or professional graphics work, will feel the difference at all.
For everyone else, the M5 Max remains the better deal, and the M5 Ultra reads less like a mainstream upgrade than a receipt for people who already know they need it.
