Apple Watch Audio Intelligence Hits Beta With iOS 27.3

Apple's conversation-summarizing features for the Series 12 and Ultra 4 arrive in the iOS 27.3 beta, and a free developer account is enough to get in.

Apple's contested "Audio Intelligence" features for the Apple Watch Series 12 ($399) and Ultra 4 ($799) reach beta Tuesday as part of iOS 27.3, and a free developer account is all it takes to try them.

The branding covers four tools, all exclusive to the two new watches. Sound Recognition flags alarms and doorbells, and Music Recognition shows what song is playing nearby. The controversial pair is Live Rewind and Siri Recap. Double-click the crown and Live Rewind gives you a loose transcript of the last 15 seconds of conversation. Siri Recap summarizes your in-person chats across the day, and you can set a schedule for when it listens, such as work hours only.

Apple says the watch never records anything. According to the company, audio streams through the Secure Enclave, a protected region of the S11 chip that even watchOS cannot access, then on to the iPhone's Secure Enclave for processing. Apple also says speakers are not identified, and the transcripts and summaries are deleted automatically unless you save them to the Siri app.

To get in early, enroll your Apple Account in the Apple Developer program, which no longer requires the $99 fee if you take the free tier. Then go to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, pick "iOS 27 Developer Beta", and install iOS 27.3 when it appears.

The feature does more than the hardware around it. The watches' other changes are new heart rate monitors and the S11 processor, so Audio Intelligence is the clearest reason to buy new. It is also the one Apple has to defend. "Not recording" is a narrow claim when the output is a running text account of your day, and the privacy case rests on Apple's description of its own chip design. The schedule control Apple describes applies to recaps. Whether Live Rewind, which responds to a crown double-click, has any comparable limit is not spelled out.
