Apple retail stores just got a shipment they're not allowed to open until October 8.
Stores worldwide received confidential boxes this week stamped "Do Not Open Until October 8." The boxes are believed to hold visual merchandising material - labels, graphics, and layout pieces staff use to update how products are displayed in stores. The timing lines up with reporting from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who said Apple plans to introduce a long-rumored smart home hub, a new Apple TV 4K, and a HomePod mini 2 on October 13. Bloomberg's own wording was vague about whether that date means an announcement or an actual launch.
The five-day gap between retail prep and the reported reveal matters because it shows Apple getting its stores camera-ready before saying anything in public - standard Apple choreography, but notable here because smart home is a market Apple has largely ceded to Amazon and Google for the better part of a decade. A real hub would be Apple's most direct answer yet to the Echo Hub and Nest displays sitting in other people's kitchens.
Apple has flirted with bigger smart home ambitions before without shipping much beyond HomePod and HomeKit accessories. Until October 13 actually happens, this is still just cardboard with a date on it.
