Gruber argued the home hub is too significant for a quiet Newsroom post since it is an all-new device running an all-new interface; he said it needs a keynote video and hands-on demos. That points toward an online-only Apple Event streamed on Apple's site and YouTube, followed by an in-person session where journalists can try the new hardware. Apple has run this exact two-step format before, pairing a streamed event with a same-day hands-on where reporters could also pick up early review units.\n\nThe timing detail matters more than the product news itself. By handing iPhone Duo units to reviewers in person instead of shipping them, Apple avoids any risk of a first-of-its-kind iPhone getting lost in the mail before its October 23 launch. It is also a tell about how Apple weighs new product categories: a smart home hub apparently rates a full keynote treatment that a routine accessory update would not.\n\nCall it security theater or just common sense: after years of pre-launch leaks, Apple decided the safest courier for its next iPhone is a company employee.","[\"apple\",\"smart-home\",\"iphone-duo\",\"product-launch\"]","2026-09-30T17:53:35.000Z","2026-10-01T04:16:52.394Z","2026-10-01T04:16:57.653Z","published",null,[24],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"editor-r1","editor",1,"Fix the dek: it says iPhone Duo review units 'ship,' but the body explicitly states Apple is handing them out in person specifically to avoid shipping them — make the dek match that detail instead of contradicting it.","resolved","consumer-tech",[32,33,34,35],"apple","smart-home","iphone-duo","product-launch",[37],{"name":38,"url":39},"MacRumors","https:\u002F\u002Fwww.macrumors.com\u002F2026\u002F09\u002F30\u002Fapple-event-on-october-13\u002F",0,{"sections":42},[43,48,53,58,63,68,73,76,81,85,90,95,100,105],{"name":44,"slug":45,"count":46,"latest_published_at":47},"AI","ai",5236,"2026-09-30T20:13:50.000Z",{"name":49,"slug":50,"count":51,"latest_published_at":52},"Security","security",799,"2026-09-30T19:29:08.000Z",{"name":54,"slug":55,"count":56,"latest_published_at":57},"Policy","policy",427,"2026-09-30T20:36:54.000Z",{"name":59,"slug":60,"count":61,"latest_published_at":62},"Deals","deals",298,"2026-09-30T21:00:26.000Z",{"name":64,"slug":65,"count":66,"latest_published_at":67},"Hardware","hardware",196,"2026-09-30T13:00:00.000Z",{"name":69,"slug":70,"count":71,"latest_published_at":72},"Science","science",157,"2026-09-30T15:00:56.000Z",{"name":74,"slug":30,"count":75,"latest_published_at":18},"Consumer Tech",148,{"name":77,"slug":78,"count":79,"latest_published_at":80},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",92,"2026-09-30T18:17:45.000Z",{"name":82,"slug":83,"count":79,"latest_published_at":84},"Software","software","2026-09-30T17:45:00.000Z",{"name":86,"slug":87,"count":88,"latest_published_at":89},"Startups","startups",83,"2026-09-29T21:51:36.000Z",{"name":91,"slug":92,"count":93,"latest_published_at":94},"Gaming","gaming",50,"2026-09-30T16:24:30.000Z",{"name":96,"slug":97,"count":98,"latest_published_at":99},"General","general",49,"2026-09-28T16:44:57.000Z",{"name":101,"slug":102,"count":103,"latest_published_at":104},"Reviews","reviews",31,"2026-09-28T14:31:34.000Z",{"name":106,"slug":107,"count":108,"latest_published_at":109},"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
