That's also roughly 10% faster than Apple's previous M5 chip, with a similar gap showing up in Cinebench. The M6 packs 12 CPU cores versus the M5's 10, and Notebookcheck measured it running about 20% more efficient per watt than the M5, and twice as efficient as the AMD chip. All of it comes courtesy of TSMC's new N2 node, the company's first 2nm-class process.

That matters because a healthy new node is no longer a given - Intel spent nearly a decade stuck on 14nm before its recent turnaround. AMD has already put next-gen Zen 6 server chips into production on N2, and Intel may use it for some Nova Lake variants next year, while Nvidia's next GPUs aren't expected to reach N2 silicon until around 2030. If N2 performs this well in a shipping product, that's an encouraging early signal for every PC chipmaker waiting in line behind Apple, assuming AI chip demand doesn't eat up the fab capacity first.

One number here doesn't hold up under scrutiny: a 10% single-core gain combined with 20% more cores works out to roughly 32% more multi-core throughput by simple math, not the roughly 50% multi-threaded gain the reviewed benchmarks reportedly show - a gap worth watching before anyone treats this generation's figures as settled.","["apple-silicon","tsmc-n2","cpu-benchmarks","semiconductors"]","2026-09-22T14:32:57.000Z","2026-09-22T15:56:12.060Z","2026-09-22T15:56:18.617Z","published",null,[24
"publisher-r1","publisher",1,"The multi-core performance claim doesn't add up: a 10% single-core gain combined with only 20% more cores (12 vs 10) would yield roughly 32% more multi-threaded performance, not the stated 50%.","resolved","hardware",[32,33,34,35],"apple-silicon","tsmc-n2","cpu-benchmarks","semiconductors",[37
PCGamer","https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/processors/if-apples-new-m6-soc-is-anything-to-go-by-next-gen-2nm-pc-chips-are-going-to-be-awesome/",0
43,48,53,58,63,67,72,77,82,87,91,96,101,105
"AI","ai",4184,"2026-09-22T13:52:15.000Z
"Security","security",698,"2026-09-22T14:41:04.000Z
"Policy","policy",364,"2026-09-22T12:37:38.000Z
"Deals","deals",196,"2026-09-22T15:06:32.000Z
"Hardware",165,"2026-09-22T14:45:00.000Z
"Science","science",130,"2026-09-20T13:48:11.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",107,"2026-09-22T16:13:36.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",78,"2026-09-18T04:00:00.000Z
"Software","software",77,"2026-09-22T13:00:00.000Z
"Startups","startups",61
"Gaming","gaming",44,"2026-09-22T14:01:16.000Z
"General","general",43,"2026-09-21T23:48:56.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",27
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
