Apple just quietly became a smart home company.
Apple unveiled a smart lock, a thermostat and a set of video doorbells, its first full push into home hardware categories it has mostly sat out. All of it connects through HomeView, a new smart home hub built to control Apple's own accessories and tie in outside apps. That marks a real shift from Apple's old playbook, where HomeKit mostly coordinated other companies' gadgets instead of Apple's own. Pricing and release timing weren't detailed in the announcement.
For years, Apple let partners like Schlage, Ecobee and Ring build the actual hardware while HomeKit supplied the software glue underneath. Owning the lock, the thermostat and the doorbell outright puts Apple in direct competition with Nest and Ring, and gives it end to end control over the data and the experience instead of just the protocol.
Whether that's good news depends on how you feel about one company owning your front door, your thermostat and the hub that runs both.
