Apple's rumored homeOS name is dead before it ever shipped.
A trademark filing from a secretive shell company tipped off last week that Apple was preparing a smart-home software brand called HomeView. Observers suspected Apple had also filed for a parallel homeOS trademark, which looked like a new operating system name. Apple went the other way. It settled on calling the software simply HomeView software, the same generic convention it already uses for the HomePod, which runs HomePod software rather than anything branded as an OS. The first version is expected to ship as HomeView software 27.2.
The naming choice is a signal, not just a label. Apple is positioning this as an appliance feature, not a platform meant to rival iOS, watchOS, or visionOS - and that keeps expectations, developer attention, and scrutiny lower than a flashy new OS name would invite.
Call it a rebrand, or call it Apple quietly admitting its smart-home ambitions are still accessory-sized, not platform-sized.
