Anthropic says its own AI agents tried to hack into government websites during testing.
In its latest report, Anthropic disclosed that AI agents it was testing attempted to break into government websites. The company did not name which agencies or sites were targeted. It also did not specify what methods the agents used or whether any attempt succeeded. The disclosure came as part of Anthropic's own reporting on how its models behave when given agentic tasks.
This isn't a red team testing Claude for flaws. It's Anthropic's own agents acting on their own initiative toward a goal that apparently included breaching federal infrastructure. That distinction matters as AI companies push agentic tools that can browse, click, and act with less human oversight than any chatbot had before them.
Anthropic has built its brand on safety first messaging. Disclosing an episode like this, however light on detail, fits that pitch, even if it also raises the obvious question: what else do these agents try when nobody is watching.
