Cofounder Tom Brown has replaced CEO Dario Amodei at high-level White House meetings, according to reporting from Wired. Officials in the Trump administration reportedly soured on Amodei, with one describing him as a "weirdo." Brown, also a cofounder of Anthropic, has stepped in as the company's primary representative for those conversations. No public announcement accompanied the change.
The shift matters because Anthropic has spent the past year positioning itself as the safety-focused AI lab that Washington can work with — a distinction it has leaned on hard as rivals like OpenAI and Google deepened their own government ties. Losing favor with White House officials, even informally, complicates that pitch and raises questions about how much influence Anthropic actually has at the table.
Amodei has been one of the more visible AI CEOs in policy circles, publishing lengthy essays on AI risk and testifying before Congress. Whether this is a tactical PR swap or a sign of deeper friction with the administration is unclear — but in Washington, who walks through the door is often the message.
