Anthropic will give qualifying startups a free year of its Claude Team plan, plus $1,000 in API credits, at no cost.
Anthropic unveiled the offer on October 6, 2026: eligible startups get a full year of Claude Team, the company's workspace-tier subscription normally billed per seat, plus $1,000 in credits to spend against the Claude API. That combination covers both the collaboration tools Team offers and the raw model access developers need to actually build products. Anthropic didn't publish specific revenue or funding cutoffs for who qualifies, framing the program instead around its own reasoning for why it exists. "We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone," the company said.
Free credits are real money saved for a cash-strapped startup, not just goodwill. They also nudge founders toward building on Claude specifically, locking in habits and integrations before a company ever has to pick a model provider for good. That's the same playbook cloud providers have run for years: hand early-stage companies free compute, then collect once the free tier runs out.
Call it generosity if you like, but it's also one of the cheapest customer-acquisition channels in software: give away access now, bill later.
