AMD just bought itself a chief scientist for $8.2 billion.
AMD announced it will acquire World Labs, the AI startup founded by researcher Fei-Fei Li, in a deal worth $8.2 billion. As part of the acquisition, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. The company has not disclosed additional terms of the deal. The move marks Li's shift from running an independent startup to holding a corporate research post at a major chipmaker.
AMD's business is built on chips, not research labs, so paying $8.2 billion to bring an AI researcher in-house says something about how the chip industry now treats scientific leadership as a competitive asset worth owning outright. It also puts AMD in more direct competition with rivals racing to lock up top AI talent through acquisitions rather than just hiring.
For a company that has spent years positioning itself as the pragmatic, cheaper alternative to Nvidia, buying an entire research lab is a much showier move than shipping another chip.
