AMD is extending FSR 4.1, its latest upscaling technology, beyond the Radeon RX 9000 cards it launched on in March. The list now includes the Xbox Series S and X.
Upscaling means a game renders at a lower resolution and software reconstructs a sharper image, trading a little fidelity for frame rate. AMD said FSR 4.1 can improve performance in more than 300 supported games, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Battlefield 6.
The PC side starts first. FSR 4.1 is appearing for Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs, Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series devices, and Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 series devices. Xbox Series S and X consoles and handhelds like the Xbox Ally X devices are also on the list, but the announcement gives no timing for Xbox.
This is mostly a delivered promise. In March, AMD said it would bring the technology to older GPUs and handhelds this year.
The reach matters more than the version number. The RX 6000 series dates from 2020, and the Xbox Series consoles arrived that year with AMD graphics hardware too. Owners of those machines cannot swap in a new GPU, so a software update is the only upgrade they will get. Nvidia's DLSS has set the bar for upscaling for years, and AMD's pitch here is that its newest version is not reserved for its newest cards.
The open question is how closely the console versions will match the PC ones. The announcement does not say which Xbox games will get FSR 4.1, or whether any of the 300-plus supported titles are console releases.
