AMD just spent $8.2 billion in stock to buy an AI lab that's barely two years old.
AMD announced today it is acquiring World Labs, the AI research lab co-founded by researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal worth about $8.2 billion. World Labs launched in 2024 and hit a $1 billion valuation within months. Its only shipped product so far is Marble, a world generation model that turns a text prompt into an interactive 3D scene, which came out in 2025. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year, and Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su.
This is AMD buying research talent and a research narrative, not revenue. World Labs has shipped exactly one product. It also signals that chipmakers now see owning frontier AI labs, not just supplying them with silicon, as the next competitive front against Nvidia.
For a company whose fortunes still ride on GPU sales to the labs it might now compete with, that's a bet worth watching closely.
