Alibaba says it has built China's most powerful AI chip, and the number backing that claim comes from Alibaba itself.
At Alibaba's annual Apsara cloud conference in Hangzhou on Tuesday, CEO Eddie Wu introduced the Zhenwu V900, the company's newest AI processor. Wu said the chip delivers three times the performance of its predecessor, the Zhenwu M890. He described it as the most powerful AI chip in China today. Alibaba did not release independent benchmark data alongside the announcement.
Chinese chipmakers are racing to close the gap with Nvidia as export controls limit access to top-tier US silicon, and every domestic performance claim doubles as a message to rivals and regulators alike. A 3x generational leap is a big number if it holds up, but a self-reported comparison from the chipmaker itself is not the same as third-party validation.
Until outside benchmarks show up, the safest read is that Alibaba built a faster chip than its last one and is happy to let 'most powerful' do the rest of the talking.
