Today's search agents have two failure modes: heuristic top-K retrieval either drops key evidence or floods the model with noise, and reinforcement learning tends to make agents overconfident, so they hallucinate answers and run redundant searches. CAS attacks both. On the retrieval side, an adaptive prediction set resizes the document set dynamically instead of using a fixed cutoff. On the training side, adaptive conformal inference scores each answer's confidence and penalizes low-confidence trajectories inside the Group Relative Policy Optimization objective, so the model learns only from trajectories it can actually back up.

This matters because agentic AI's search-and-reason loop has never had a formal way to know when it lacks enough evidence, so it guesses anyway and calls that an answer. Bolting statistical coverage guarantees onto both retrieval and training is a more rigorous fix than the usual playbook of more prompting or a bigger model, and the reported gains, better accuracy with far fewer redundant tool calls, are the kind of efficiency argument that actually matters for anyone paying per API call.

The tests so far are single-hop and multi-hop QA benchmarks in a controlled setting, not the messy open web, so whether these guarantees survive contact with real search noise is the open question.","["ai","reinforcement-learning","conformal-prediction","search-agents"]","2026-08-24T04:00:00.000Z","2026-08-24T04:46:36.304Z","2026-08-24T04:46:48.230Z","published",null,[],"ai",[24,26,27,28],"reinforcement-learning","conformal-prediction","search-agents",[30
arXiv cs.AI","https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.20771",0
36,40,44,49,54,59,64,69,74,79,84,89,94,99
"AI",3325,"2026-08-24T09:09:31.000Z
"Security","security",461
"Policy","policy",218,"2026-08-23T19:30:00.000Z
"Deals","deals",179,"2026-06-29T20:02:07.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",145,"2026-08-22T21:25:33.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",95,"2026-08-18T16:05:00.000Z
"Science","science",91,"2026-08-20T10:01:48.000Z
"Software","software",73,"2026-08-18T07:51:50.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",69,"2026-08-18T04:00:00.000Z
"Startups","startups",50,"2026-08-22T16:23:09.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",41,"2026-07-09T04:00:00.000Z
"General","general",33,"2026-08-18T22:18:13.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",20,"2026-06-24T12:00:01.000Z
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
