Ask for eight at once and the odds crater.\n\nResearchers built a benchmark called Constraint Saturation Evaluation to measure how large language models handle multiple simultaneous rules - things like output schemas, reasoning structure, and safety boundaries. They ran 15 models through 36 constraint types and 369,753 individual checks, scored entirely by rule-based verifiers rather than another LLM's judgment. The results: pass rates for any single constraint decline gradually as more are added, but the odds of satisfying all of them at once collapse multiplicatively. A model that nails individual constraints 41% of the time at eight simultaneous constraints succeeds on all eight together just 5.7% of the time. Structural constraints, which require tracking state across a response, degrade about twice as fast as simple lexical ones. Reliable performance breaks down past five or six constraints for most models tested.\n\nThis matters because production AI systems rarely ask for just one thing. A typical prompt might demand a JSON schema, a word limit, a tone, and a safety boundary in the same breath - exactly the compositional regime where this study shows failure compounds rather than adds. The multiplicative math means teams stacking one more rule onto a prompt are taking on far more risk than they think.\n\nThe paper's most useful finding is which failures are correlated: a wrong word count, say, tends to break every other constraint that reads the same output.
