Under a fixed budget, old memory blocks get evicted to make room for new ones. The paper isolates a specific failure mode: a block of context that only weakly matches an agent's current query, but that a later step actually depends on, gets discarded anyway - and nothing looks wrong until retrieval fails downstream. The researchers built a deterministic benchmark to measure this directly and tested a fix called Dependency-aware Semantic Garbage Collection, or DSGC, which uses one-hop graph awareness to protect memory blocks linked to material the agent still needs. In their main test suite, DSGC raised \"full-chain retention\" - the rate at which every necessary supporting fact survives - from 0.03 to 0.90 with a lexical encoder, and from 0.23 to 1.00 with a sentence encoder.\n\nThat gap matters because it points at a problem more basic than retrieval quality. Most memory systems marketed today optimize for finding relevant text once it's asked for.
