The dataset includes 17,886 videos: 1,830 real clips spanning 10 social-risk categories, paired with 16,056 AI-generated versions from four open-source and five closed-source video generators. The team ran seven traditional detectors, ten zero-shot multimodal models under three review settings, and two multimodal language models fine-tuned specifically for this task. Across all three approaches, none generalized consistently across the benchmark's videos.\n\nThe study also found that detectability shifts with generation quality, conditioning inputs, and sampling seeds, and that the videos most likely to fool human viewers are also the ones detectors struggle with most. Worse, simulated social dissemination made detection even less reliable, meaning the moment a fake crisis video actually starts spreading is the moment detection tools get weaker, not stronger.\n\nThat timing problem is the real story. Platforms and newsrooms lean on automated detection to triage viral crisis footage during fast-moving events, exactly when verification matters most and time is shortest. If detectors degrade under the same conditions that make a video go viral, the tools are failing at the one job they're supposed to do.\n\nThis isn't a new fight.
