When they let an agent see its full history of past actions and the environment's responses, performance improved, as expected. But when they shuffled that history into random order, or broke the link between each action and what happened right after it, scores barely dropped. That implies the agents were not tracking cause and effect, they were treating history more like volume than useful record. To test a fix, the team simply tagged each observation as the direct result of the action before it, no new information added, just a label. That one change improved task success and cut down on agents repeating moves that had already failed. A learned calibrator that reviews past actions and decides what is worth keeping pushed results higher still.\n\nThis matters because agent design right now leans hard on giving the model more context: longer memory windows, more retries, bigger logs. This research suggests that approach treats a comprehension problem like a capacity problem. The agent does not need more history, it needs history it can actually parse as cause and effect.\n\nIt is the AI equivalent of a new hire handed a pile of old meeting notes and expected to know why last quarter's project failed. Volume is not the same as understanding.","[\"ai\",\"ai-agents\",\"llm-research\"]","2026-10-05T04:00:00.000Z","2026-10-05T18:08:15.902Z","2026-10-05T18:08:21.360Z","published",null,[],"ai",[24,26,27],"ai-agents","llm-research",[29],{"name":30,"url":31},"arXiv cs.AI","https:\u002F\u002Farxiv.org\u002Fabs\u002F2610.02769",0,{"sections":34},[35,38,42,47,52,57,61,66,70,75,80,85,90,95],{"name":36,"slug":24,"count":37,"latest_published_at":18},"AI",6233,{"name":39,"slug":40,"count":41,"latest_published_at":18},"Security","security",868,{"name":43,"slug":44,"count":45,"latest_published_at":46},"Policy","policy",444,"2026-10-03T15:02:01.000Z",{"name":48,"slug":49,"count":50,"latest_published_at":51},"Deals","deals",323,"2026-10-04T13:00:00.000Z",{"name":53,"slug":54,"count":55,"latest_published_at":56},"Hardware","hardware",204,"2026-10-03T14:50:50.000Z",{"name":58,"slug":59,"count":60,"latest_published_at":18},"Science","science",177,{"name":62,"slug":63,"count":64,"latest_published_at":65},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",158,"2026-10-03T03:21:12.000Z",{"name":67,"slug":68,"count":69,"latest_published_at":18},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",98,{"name":71,"slug":72,"count":73,"latest_published_at":74},"Software","software",97,"2026-10-04T10:00:00.000Z",{"name":76,"slug":77,"count":78,"latest_published_at":79},"Startups","startups",92,"2026-10-04T14:36:25.000Z",{"name":81,"slug":82,"count":83,"latest_published_at":84},"Gaming","gaming",53,"2026-10-02T02:50:39.000Z",{"name":86,"slug":87,"count":88,"latest_published_at":89},"General","general",51,"2026-10-05T02:35:01.000Z",{"name":91,"slug":92,"count":93,"latest_published_at":94},"Reviews","reviews",32,"2026-10-02T18:00:00.000Z",{"name":96,"slug":97,"count":98,"latest_published_at":99},"How-To","how-to",7,"2026-10-01T09:00:00.000Z"]
