The problem it addresses is real. Interfaces built for people often hide the information those agents need, like whether a button actually does something or what state a screen is in. Affora's authors ran three controlled studies covering component design, visual variation, and interaction patterns, then turned the results into reusable components and automated checks that developers can run against their own interfaces. They tested the system on interfaces they had no hand in building, a fairer test than tuning on your own examples.\n\nThe finding worth noting: agents did not need stripped-down, agent-only interfaces to succeed. What mattered was whether the underlying interaction meaning survived somewhere an agent could parse it, even when the visual design varied widely. That is a different bet than the two approaches getting more attention right now: skip the UI entirely with dedicated agent APIs, or have agents brute-force their way through screenshots and pixel coordinates the way older automation scripts did. Affora is betting that people and agents can share one interface instead of maintaining two.\n\nThe paper is upfront about its limits. Gains only showed up on interfaces that were already missing that structural information; on sites that already expose clear state, or on problems outside Affora's coverage, the improvement mostly disappeared. A single workflow case study is also thin evidence for claims of reduced interaction cost.
