Nine LLM families were tested across repeated runs, producing mean rank consistency of 90.3%.\n\nMost AI safety benchmarks ask whether a model refuses harmful requests or follows instructions. VirtueMap asks something harder: when multiple responses are all defensible, which values does the model actually reach for? That distinction matters because real-world edge cases rarely have one correct answer, and a model optimized to avoid harm can still systematically favor, say, caution over honesty - a tradeoff few benchmarks surface.\n\nThe largest gaps between models showed up on Courage, Temperance, and Justice - the virtues with the most room for reasonable disagreement. Whether that variation reflects genuine value differences baked into training data and RLHF, or just noise in how models interpret abstract prompts, the paper does not fully resolve.
