Security company Forever says it caught one following a stranger's orders on a customer's computer.\n\nIn an October 22 blog post, the company said it blocked the installation of \"function-color,\" a package linked to the MALFEX malware campaign that Checkmarx documented. It then traced the request to a text file in Downloads. Forever did not establish how the file got there, but it showed one route: depending on browser settings, a website can drop a file into Downloads without asking. If someone then starts an assistant in that folder, it can read the file.\n\nThe trick works because these tools read instruction files called AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md, where developers leave notes on which fonts to use or what to test. The assistant has no reliable way to tell whose notes it is reading. On an isolated computer, Forever said Codex downloaded and ran the malware, then changed settings so the attacker's server would load in later sessions. \"You can leave the folder. The poison stays,\" the researchers wrote. A separate test against Claude Code worked about half the time, exposing a login token and letting the researchers send commands back.\n\nThe technique is not new. Pillar Security researchers hid malicious instructions in coding rules in March 2025, and NVIDIA's researchers used a poisoned AGENTS.md file in April 2026 to get Codex to sabotage software and conceal the change. What differs here is the setting: Forever says this was an actual attacker, not a research demo. That shifts the question from whether the flaw exists to how long defenders can treat agent instruction files as harmless notes.\n\nForever's advice is practical:\n\n- Keep coding assistants out of Downloads.\n- Read unfamiliar AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md files before an agent works in a project.\n- Leave sandboxes and approval prompts on.\n- Check settings for unfamiliar servers, and revoke and replace any login tokens that may have been exposed.\n\nDeleting the original file may not undo changes the assistant already made.\n\nAntivirus tools were built to inspect programs. A text file is not a program until an agent with your credentials decides to treat it as one.","[\"ai-agents\",\"prompt-injection\",\"malware\",\"coding-assistants\"]","2026-10-23T16:14:35.000Z","2026-10-23T17:11:22.902Z","2026-10-23T17:11:24.373Z","published",null,[],"security",[26,27,28,29],"ai-agents","prompt-injection","malware","coding-assistants",[31],{"name":32,"url":33},"Mashable","https:\u002F\u002Fmashable.com\u002Ftech\u002Fhackers-ai-coding-agents-downloads-malware",0,{"sections":36},[37,42,46,51,56,61,65,70,75,80,85,90,95,100],{"name":38,"slug":39,"count":40,"latest_published_at":41},"AI","ai",7075,"2026-10-23T19:32:39.000Z",{"name":43,"slug":24,"count":44,"latest_published_at":45},"Security",1063,"2026-10-23T19:41:05.000Z",{"name":47,"slug":48,"count":49,"latest_published_at":50},"Policy","policy",581,"2026-10-23T16:58:39.000Z",{"name":52,"slug":53,"count":54,"latest_published_at":55},"Deals","deals",569,"2026-10-23T14:43:38.000Z",{"name":57,"slug":58,"count":59,"latest_published_at":60},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",293,"2026-10-23T18:42:54.000Z",{"name":62,"slug":63,"count":59,"latest_published_at":64},"Hardware","hardware","2026-10-23T17:42:31.000Z",{"name":66,"slug":67,"count":68,"latest_published_at":69},"Science","science",217,"2026-10-23T16:13:16.000Z",{"name":71,"slug":72,"count":73,"latest_published_at":74},"Startups","startups",148,"2026-10-23T16:26:29.000Z",{"name":76,"slug":77,"count":78,"latest_published_at":79},"Software","software",143,"2026-10-23T19:28:10.000Z",{"name":81,"slug":82,"count":83,"latest_published_at":84},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",122,"2026-10-21T16:00:00.000Z",{"name":86,"slug":87,"count":88,"latest_published_at":89},"General","general",101,"2026-10-23T18:46:30.000Z",{"name":91,"slug":92,"count":93,"latest_published_at":94},"Gaming","gaming",88,"2026-10-22T22:25:33.000Z",{"name":96,"slug":97,"count":98,"latest_published_at":99},"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z",{"name":101,"slug":102,"count":103,"latest_published_at":104},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
