Instead of letting the AI output raw motor commands, the model proposes task-level compliance settings - how much force to allow, and what stage of the task it thinks it is in. A separate, high-frequency passivity shield checks those proposals against real-time contact physics before anything reaches the hardware, using energy-tank accounting to catch invalid or stale predictions. In simulated and real-world connector-insertion tests, the shielded system was more precise than an unshielded VLA baseline and recorded zero passivity violations, even when the team deliberately shifted the required compliance mid-task.

VLA models are good at understanding what a task is, translating natural language and vision into action, but they run at low update rates and were never designed to be trusted with millisecond-by-millisecond force control. This work is essentially an admission that letting a language model touch the motors directly is risky for anything involving real contact, and it offers a template, keep the AI as an advisor rather than a controller, for other contact-rich robotics work.

It's a narrower, more cautious approach than the let-the-foundation-model-drive-everything pitch that has shaped recent robotics demos, and probably a more honest one.","["robotics","vision-language-action","ai-safety","manipulation"]","2026-09-21T04:00:00.000Z","2026-09-21T07:19:32.288Z","2026-09-21T07:19:43.789Z","published",null,[],"https://cdn.xyz.onl/article-images/a-safety-layer-stops-ai-robots-from-pushing-too-hard.webp","ai",[27,28,29,30],"robotics","vision-language-action","ai-safety","manipulation",[32
arXiv cs.AI","https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.00515",0
38,42,46,51,56,61,66,71,76,81,86,91,96,101
"AI",4175,"2026-09-21T10:30:00.000Z
"Security","security",681
"Policy","policy",352,"2026-09-21T10:18:06.000Z
"Deals","deals",184,"2026-09-21T10:18:31.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",157,"2026-09-21T11:04:12.000Z
"Science","science",130,"2026-09-20T13:48:11.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",99,"2026-09-09T17:27:33.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",78,"2026-09-18T04:00:00.000Z
"Software","software",75,"2026-09-10T20:41:21.000Z
"Startups","startups",55,"2026-09-09T23:14:29.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",43,"2026-09-10T12:18:06.000Z
"General","general",42,"2026-09-18T22:35:10.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",20,"2026-06-24T12:00:01.000Z
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
