Those denser captions are supposed to be a straightforward upgrade, but nobody had a reliable way to measure whether a given recaptioning pipeline makes claims that are actually true, covers genuinely new information, or just produces longer text. A team introduces a matched-budget audit framework that caps every caption at a fixed text budget and scores it across five axes, covering how much of the image it describes, how faithful its claims are, and the health of its wording. The framework counts claims using a unit called controllable basic units, then runs seven comparisons across five public datasets, including the CC12M corpus.\n\nUnder two different judge models, Qwen and Gemma, the audited recaptioned versions packed in 3.4 to 6.4 more supported claims per caption than their source captions, at the same text budget. That is a rare case of someone putting a number on an upgrade the industry has mostly taken on faith.
