The twist: BORF adds dilation and stride, borrowed from convolutional neural networks, so it can spot patterns at multiple time scales. The team also found an algorithmic shortcut that cuts the time complexity of SAX-based classification. Tested on more than 150 datasets, BORF matched the accuracy of leading time series classifiers while running faster and staying fully deterministic.\n\nThat last word matters more than it sounds. Most top-performing time series classifiers are ensembles of black-box models, and even approaches billed as interpretable, like shapelet-based methods, lean on randomization to stay fast, meaning the explanation for a given prediction can change from run to run.
