Standard image and video codecs optimize for generic visual fidelity, which wastes bitrate on background detail a robot's policy never uses. SPARC instead uses a lightweight temporal mask selector that shifts bits toward the camera views and spatial regions that actually matter for the task, and a "tilted rate loss" that stops training from quietly deleting rare but task-critical details. Tested on RoboCasa365, VLABench, and LIBERO, SPARC beat conventional codecs and other learned compression methods at matching bitrates, and also improved the bitrate-to-success tradeoff in real-world remote-control tests.

This matters because VLA robots increasingly run on multiple high-frequency cameras, and that data has to move somewhere - over a network to a remote operator, or between a robot's sensors and a compute unit it can't carry onboard. Bandwidth is the bottleneck nobody designing these systems wants to talk about, and generic codecs built for streaming video or photo storage are the wrong tool: they preserve what humans find pretty, not what a control policy needs to not crash into a wall.

It's a narrow fix, but a telling one. Every time a new class of AI system shows up, it eventually breaks the assumptions baked into the infrastructure underneath it - here, that image compression should serve human perception by default.","["robotics","vision-language-action","compression","ai-research"]","2026-10-09T04:00:00.000Z","2026-10-10T08:07:50.162Z","2026-10-10T08:08:01.518Z","published",null,[],"ai",[26,27,28,29],"robotics","vision-language-action","compression","ai-research",[31
arXiv cs.AI","https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.16253",0
37,41,46,51,56,61,66,71,76,81,86,91,96,101
"AI",6840,"2026-10-09T19:36:56.000Z
"Security","security",941,"2026-10-09T19:25:43.000Z
"Policy","policy",490,"2026-10-09T14:25:43.000Z
"Deals","deals",483,"2026-10-09T11:20:39.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",233,"2026-10-09T16:07:54.000Z
"Science","science",195,"2026-10-09T11:00:57.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",183,"2026-10-09T14:50:57.000Z
"Startups","startups",120,"2026-10-09T17:02:31.000Z
"Software","software",114,"2026-10-08T17:57:01.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",109,"2026-10-09T13:03:48.000Z
"General","general",69,"2026-10-09T19:10:07.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",59,"2026-10-09T11:43:43.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",34,"2026-10-08T14:00:22.000Z
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
