Six pallets of Nvidia equipment worth $11.4 million disappeared between Oakland and Fort Worth, Texas, and police have still announced no arrests and no recovery.
According to reporting by The Mercury News, the pallets left Oakland on August 29 on a truck bound for Fort Worth. The pickup reportedly happened as scheduled, by a truck bearing the logo of a food transportation company. After that, the shipment went off the grid.
The buyers did not notice until early September, when they realized the cargo had never arrived. Police tracing the truck's route found that it made several multi-hour stops after loading, then lost it somewhere in San Bernardino County, California. Oakland police confirmed that a grand theft report was filed on September 13 and that the investigation is ongoing. More than two months after the shipment vanished, the case has produced no public arrests and no recovered cargo.
Much of the basic picture is missing. Authorities have not said which Nvidia products were on the pallets or how the theft was carried out. That leaves the $11.4 million valuation as the only measure of the loss. Spread across six pallets, it works out to roughly $1.9 million each.
The timeline is the most useful detail on offer. The pickup went off on schedule, yet the problem surfaced only when the goods failed to show up at their destination days later. By then the truck had already made its stops and left the trail investigators are now following.
The open question is the truck itself. Police have not said whether the food transportation company whose logo it carried was the carrier actually hired for the job, or how the vehicle came to collect the pallets at all.
